Proverbs 11:5-6

The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight,
but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.
The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.
New International Version (NIV)

No contest. I just let Sunday happened as it is. My feet carried me along our old church and attend the night or “vesper” service but before that I visited my five month old nephew hospitalized because of pneumonia and saw a few little children with the same sickness. I thought, it could be the climate frequent changes effect.

It was tough to find a conversation to start with without touching some family issues when we are with family. It could be heartbreaking for a daughter to hear straight from its mother mouth that she doesn’t want to have anything to do with her daughter anymore because she doesn’t want to have a bitter life and burden herself trying to help and fix her daughter’s life. Isn’t it what mothers are for? She got contented and had found her peace with his son who finally had worked overseas and had provided the finances she needed. She had her comfort zone and would not dare let anything get her out of it and feel miserable. She never felt miserable taking care of his families and find them good at all times, I guess she loved him that much. Suits her fine. Who wants misery anyway?

On the other hand, why would a daughter who had her own family needs to burden her mother with her own affairs? (Mas panatag ang landas ng tapat ang pamumuhay, ngunit nabubuwal ang masama sa sariling kabuktutan) Maybe we need to carry our own cross and try to live righteously and peacefully and try not to pass burden to other people. We all have our own burdens to carry and one can only carry so much. We should be responsible to accept the effect of what we do.

So I thought…” If one cannot manage to be a blessing to others then just try the best not to be a burden.”

But then another question…What is family all about if one cannot tell and share and one doesn’t want to listen and help?

  1. This is such a wonderful reflection. This was Sunday's gospel/homily, and it was really a great sermon. I just hope every single one of us realizes this and not depend on others with our own burdens as they have their own to take care of.

  4. My parents are always there to listen. I always try my best to tell them about my problems in a nice way so that they won't treat it as a burden. In the first place, I really don't want to see them worried.

    1. Very true, in their older age, It is really hard to see them sad. As much as possible we try to make them happy all times. We thought of that...how about our siblings? We cannot control their minds and it is sad if they were the cause of worries...on the other hand, it could be they really need help.

    1. It is one way to love others by giving them a more comfortable life... but how about if one need help?

    2. I feel that there is a certain limit to help as sometimes we harm a person too much by going too readily to their aid that they never learn to grow up and face their own troubles. I guess it depends on person and situation also.

  6. You are right, rather than be the burden, be the one who helps carry the burdens. But it's how the world is and there will always be people needing help and guidance. I guess that is why there are families, and there are communities and social workers. It's not a solitary life, but a life meant to always reach out...no matter what.

We truly have different cross to carry, that is the reason why God asked us to carry our cross and follow Him.

This is absolutely a very nice reflection. i agree, i never want to be a burden to anyone, even to my families. i try my best to manage my own problems but i agree with sis aileen, we are not meant to be alone. sometimes we really have to have someone out there to share life with. we don't have to burden them, we just want them to be there.

    1. Same feeling, Ms. Van. I was hooked up with mix kind of feelings while I was in this situation. I just chose to listen. I could not take sides so I just prayed.

  16. parents should never take sides. i cannot imagine a mother preferring one child over the other. but children must also learn not to be over dependent on their parents. they must also strive to make it on their own because it's not everyday someone can come to their rescue.

    1. True. It is so stressful for an old mother of 60's to always listen to their children's problem and help but also they are mothers!Where can a daughter or son go to when they needed comfort? ...life.

  17. People are really different. While some people are doing their best so they will be a burden, others are doing otherwise. When you are going through a situation like this, dapat sana mother will not take side just because the other one can provide her well. Kasi anak naman sila pareho but we never know what makes her feel that way same with the daugther. But no matter what happen, family will always be a family. They just need a better understanding, they need communicate because love will sure be greater than any rough feelings :)
